Casa Grande Main Street An Arizona Main Street Community
Casa Grande is one of Arizona's 15 Main Street communities, working to enhance downtown by encouraging high-quality design, preservation and reuse of historic buildings, community-oriented activities and economic growth. This downtown revitalization energizes the entire community and helps position Casa Grande as a key shopping, service, and heritage tourism destination. For the fourth year Casa Grande Main Street has been recognized as an Accredited National Main Street Program.
Main Streets' annual Historic Down-town Street Fair/Car & Bike Show and the Arizona Main Street award winning Art in the Alley events are just some of the family activities that are creating a sense of place in the downtown.
There are 42 buildings listed on the National and Local Historical Registers within the downtown Main Street district. Of special historical interest are the City Hall, Historical Society Museum, three restaurants, four churches, and Casa Grande Art Museum. Our historic Paramount Theatre received a 2005 Governor's Heritage Preservation Honor Award as well as three Arizona Main Street Awards. Many area residents and visitors are drawn to a number of downtown art objects, as well as Peart Park, and the Palm Island Family Aquatic Park, all within close proximity. Cas a Grande Valley Historical Society
The Casa Grande Valley Historical Society was founded in 1964 by a group of women from the Woman's Club. The Historical Society & Museum includes Heritage Hall, or what is commonly called the "old stone church."
This is the 1927 Presbyterian Church built by stonemason Michael Sullivan who also built several other field; stone structures in the area including the Woman's Club, several private homes, and the WWI Matthew B. Juan Memorial in Sacaton. Heritage Hall is included in the National Register of Historic Buildings.
In 1983, the Historical Society purchased, and moved, an old grammar school building set for demolition. This one room schoolhouse was built in the 1930s and was the segregated school in Casa Grande for several decades. The teacher at the time was Rebecca Dallis, an African-American woman with a Master's Degree in Education. The schoolhouse is now named in her honor.
Currently, the Museum has over 16,000 artifacts and over 22,000 photographs and documents that focus on the Casa Grande Valley history. Collections include American Indian artifacts, ranching gear, mining equipment, agricultural tools, period furniture, quilts and other textiles, military memorabilia, letters, newspapers, photographs, ledgers, and many other items that reflect the history of the Casa Grande Valley.
Over 3,000 visitors annually come to the Museum from all over the world. The Museum conducts school tours and developed Artifact Boxes as a hands-on teacher resource to use within the classroom. Programs and events sponsored by the Historical Society include speakers, presentations, re-enactments, workshops, and outreach education programs. 520-836-2223, e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
